How to Tour a Wedding Venue Like a Pro

how to tour a wedding venue louisiana

Touring a wedding venue isn’t just about seeing pretty spaces — it’s your chance to ask the right questions, catch the hidden details, and make sure a space will truly work for your big day. As a local wedding photographer, I’ve been on hundreds of venue tours, and I’ve picked up a few tips that can help you tour like a pro (and avoid surprises later).

1. Start With the Basics: Capacity, Price & Date

Before you fall in love with the chandeliers or the garden views, make sure the venue actually fits your wedding budget and your guest list. Ask about:

  • ✔ Guest capacity for seated and standing setups
  • ✔ Available dates and how far in advance you need to book
  • ✔ Hourly vs. full-day pricing and what’s included

2. Ask What’s “Really” Included

Does the price include tables, chairs, linens, staff, setup, or cleanup? Many venues have beautiful packages, but some require you to rent key elements separately. Be sure to ask about:

  • ✔ Tables and chairs (how many, what kind?)
  • ✔ Sound system, lighting, microphone access
  • ✔ Parking and restrooms — is there enough?

3. Walk Through the Day, Start to Finish

Tour the venue as if you were a guest — and as if you were the bride or groom. Where will you get ready? Where will people park? How far is the walk from ceremony to reception? Think about:

  • ✔ Flow of the day — is it intuitive or confusing?
  • ✔ Space for vendors (photographers, DJs, caterers)
  • ✔ Rain backup plan — and the backup plan for the backup

4. Bring a List — and Take Notes

Bring your phone, your fiancé(e), a notebook, or even your photographer. Ask questions as you walk through and snap a few photos for reference. (Bonus: jot down how the space feels — you’ll forget by venue #3!)

5. Ask About Restrictions & Policies

Some venues have hidden limitations that can affect your plans. Before you book, make sure you ask:

  • ✔ Are outside vendors allowed?
  • ✔ Is there a curfew or noise ordinance?
  • ✔ Are open flames, sparklers, or pets allowed?

6. Trust Your Gut

You’ll remember how the space looked — but you’ll also remember how the staff made you feel. Were they welcoming? Did they answer your questions clearly? A beautiful venue means nothing if communication is poor or disorganized. The best venues feel good from the first tour.
